Record Alert: Urvil Patel’s Explosive Knock Shines in SMAT

Exactly a year after smashing the second-fastest List A century by an Indian, Gujarat’s Urvil Patel has set another milestone in cricket. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) in Indore, the opener hammered an unbeaten 28-ball century—the fastest T20 hundred by an Indian and the second-fastest in T20 cricket overall.

Patel’s blistering knock came while chasing 156 against Tripura. His unbeaten 113 off just 35 balls, featuring seven fours and 12 towering sixes, powered Gujarat to victory in just 10.2 overs. Among his highlights, four sixes came off Tripura skipper Mandeep Singh, who conceded 24 runs in five balls, while other bowlers were similarly dismantled by Patel’s onslaught.

Breaking Records and Rewriting History

The fastest T20 century record still belongs to Sahil Chauhan of Estonia, who reached the milestone in 27 balls against Cyprus earlier this year. However, Patel’s effort eclipsed Rishabh Pant’s 32-ball hundred in 2018, setting a new benchmark for Indian players in domestic T20 cricket.

A Remarkable Journey

This isn’t the first time Patel has turned heads. On November 27 last year, he smashed a 41-ball century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, ranking second in the fastest List A hundreds by an Indian, just behind Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball effort. Remarkably, this came a day after being released by Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.

Although Patel went unsold in the 2025 IPL mega auction, his latest heroics could spark renewed interest in the dynamic opener. With his record-breaking performances, Urvil Patel continues to make a strong case as one of India’s most explosive young talents.
