Jehangir Art Gallery Hosts Vishal Sablley’s Nayika: A Journey into Mythical Feminine Archetypes

Celebrated artist Vishal Sablley is set to unveil his latest solo exhibition, Nayika: Recreating the Essence of Feminine, at Jehangir Art Gallery from December 31, 2024, to January 6, 2025, between 11.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. This marks Sablley’s second solo showcase at the esteemed gallery, following his previous exhibition that explored themes of feminine strength and Indian identity. With Nayika, Sablley delves deeper into these powerful themes, creating a space where the divine essence of femininity is celebrated. This grand exhibition also marks his eighth solo show overall, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to exploring the multifaceted nature of womanhood through art.

With a career spanning over 16 years, Sablley has dedicated his artistry to exploring the dynamic spirit of the Nayika—a force embodying beauty, resilience, and empowerment. His latest collection draws inspiration from goddess archetypes such as Durga, Lakshmi, Tripurasundari, Sita, and Parvati, as well as enigmatic symbols like the Yoginis and Yakshinis, bridging India’s mythological heritage with contemporary identity.

“This exhibition is not just a recreation of mystical tales but a reflection of the timeless feminine spirit,” Sablley explains. “Each painting invites viewers to explore how these narratives resonate in our lives today.”

Sablley’s artistic journey has been shaped by accolades and encouragement from luminaries like M.F. Hussain and S.H. Raza. A recipient of the Young Artist Scholarship Award from the Ministry of Culture, he has also been recognized at the All India Art Exhibition organized by Lokmat Media. These milestones have infused his work with a profound connection to India’s cultural legacy.

Says Vishal, “During my research under the HRD scholarship, I found myself deeply drawn to the evocative beauty of Indian medieval poetry, such as Geet Govind and Rasikpriya. These timeless works vividly describe the Nayika- feminine archetypes—in their myriad postures and appearances. My studies delved into the enchanting personas of Chitrini, Shakhini, and Padmini, among others, inspiring my first solo exhibition, which celebrated the strength and essence of ancient Indian women.

In my upcoming solo show, the Nayika evolves—transforming into powerful goddesses, embodying divinity and the profound energy they represent. My fascination with Indian mythology remains a cornerstone of my art. To me, it is a treasure trove of inspiration, offering a glimpse into the extraordinary forms of goddesses like Lalita, Brahmani, and Bhagavati. Each canvas reflects this rich legacy through a distinctly Indian color palette, celebrating the vibrancy of our culture and heritage.”

Through Nayika: Recreating the Essence of Feminine, Sablley aims to ignite curiosity and foster a connection between the ancient and the modern. The exhibition offers a visual journey through India’s rich cultural landscape, celebrating feminine strength as a cornerstone of identity.

The exhibition will be open to the public at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, from December 31 to January 6. Art enthusiasts and cultural connoisseurs are encouraged to immerse themselves in this evocative tribute to the feminine spirit.
