Renowned actress Kangana Ranaut is set to make cinematic history with her latest project, ‘Emergency,’ where she takes on the challenging role of former Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Describing it as her most ambitious undertaking yet, Ranaut’s four-time National Award-winning performance promises a deep dive into the past, offering an authentic and candid exploration of history. Positioned as a high-budget portrayal of a pivotal moment in Indian democracy, ‘Emergency’ delves into the infamous Simla Accord of July 1972, signed between Indira Gandhi and the then President of Pakistan, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
The Simla Agreement, also known as The Shimla Agreement, was signed on July 2, 1972, in Shimla, India, and marked the official conclusion of the 1971 India-Pakistan war. It aimed to establish peace, necessitating India’s withdrawal of forces, addressing the Kashmir issue, and fostering improved relations between the two nations. While the accord facilitated the return of seized land, with India returning over 13,000 km to Pakistan, controversy continues to linger in India’s political history. ‘Emergency’ provides audiences with a timely opportunity to revisit this controversial event, offering insights into the complexities of the agreement.
Penned and directed by Kangana Ranaut, ‘Emergency‘ boasts a stellar cast, including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik in pivotal roles.
